Neue Welt
The construction of the new weir in 1624 allowed previously unused land to be reclaimed for cultivation. It was already called “Neue Welt” [new world] at the time. Waterpower was also used here: around 1660, the iron-monger Ludwig Krug from Basel built a hammer mill and a wire drawing mill. The impressive building with the striking staircase tower still exists today and is one of the most prominent architectural monuments on the Teich. After it had served as a textile factory for a time, the Christoph Merian Foundation purchased it in 1966 and had it exemplarily renovated in 1970.
